RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
