Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
