No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
