Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also included experts in different industries.
