Washington Commanders leader Coach Quinn has admitted he bears a portion of the blame for a serious injury to the squad’s signal-caller, Jayden Daniels.
Details of the Injury and Situation
Daniels, who enjoyed one of the greatest rookie campaigns of all time the previous year, suffered a displaced left elbow in Sunday’s defeat to the Seahawks. Even though Daniels throws with his right arm, the issue has left his campaign uncertain. The injury was serious enough that the television broadcast avoided showing replays and several players looked away as Daniels was treated by team doctors.
Criticism and Coach’s Response
Coach Quinn came under criticism as numerous believed Daniels should not have been on the field to begin with. The injury occurred in the final period with the Commanders trailing 38-7, making a recovery unlikely. It is typical in such situations for teams to insert their reserve QB to avoid injuries to their first-string player.
“I understand. I’ve been thinking about it nonstop, too, and, wow, I erred,” Quinn said of his choice to leave Daniels in the game. “This is 100% on me.”
Aftermath and Team Prospects
Marcus Mariota will be the Commanders’ starting quarterback from now on, but he will lead a roster in disarray. After reaching the conference title game last season behind Daniels’s excellence, the franchise have faced difficulties this season. They also lost cornerback Marshon Lattimore (ACL tear) and wide receiver Luke McCaffrey (broken collarbone) on Sunday, and have a host of other key players on injured reserve. The Washington squad are three wins and six losses so far, and it would take a massive turnaround for the team to reach the playoffs.
